During the late 1950's I developed an interest in blacksmithing and a retired agriculture teacher gave me a forge. For the next couple of years I burnt and attempted to bang out a few parts. With the art of blacksmithing almost dead and no source for training the interest waned.
A few years ago I discovered the John C. Campbell Folk School and my interest in blacksmithing was rekindled. At the Folk School some of the countries leading artist-blacksmiths come to teach. While at the Folk School I discovered The Artist-Blacksmith Quarterly which describes the tools and techniques used to produce much of the ironwork in the Philadelphia region. The training at the Folk School and the articles published in the Quarterly has inspired me to recreate the look and feel of the ironwork of that era.
To achieve the vintage look, rivets, collars, hot splitting and other traditional techniques are used in conjunction with modern techniques.
